spacers, braces, head gear... oh my!

This cutie discovered he was in desperate need of ... well, a lot of dental care. I have been meaning to set up this appointment for him for a few months but it just hasn't been working out very well so at the beginning of the year - you know, that fresh start, clean palette, ready to start anew feeling that a new year gives you? - I scheduled a lot of appointments and today's was Jaiden's evaluative orthodontic appointment.

After I managed to not choke when I saw the soon to be bill for his proposed orthodontic work, I was able to slowly absorb the shock of exactly what they planned to do to his mouth. His sweet little mouth where big adult teeth were managing to take over and clearly were not going to fit well. So we are talking the full meal deal - starting with spacers, full mouth braces, palatal expanders and head gear! Eeek! As I took this all in, I noticed he was grinning ear to ear which almost made me cry because he really has no clue what exactly this means. I watched him examine the teeth molds that demonstrated all of these various stages and how he held the key ring of rubber band color choices. I watched his eyes sparkle and that adorable smile.

But what I found most interesting as we drove back to school was the questions Jaiden was asking me about how he would get to change the colors of the rubber bands! "What colors do you think would work for Easter, Mommy?" "How about 4th of July?" and then "maybe for Alyssa's birthday month, I will do pink for her!" followed up with "Mom, I get to be festive now!" As if that was important??? Heck, if I knew he wanted to be festive, I could have bought him festive t-shirts at Target or something!

So here we are crossing a new bridge of his growing up... I will keep you posted!

friends and crafts and school

Alyssa had a play date with one of her girl scout friends. They decided to teach school for the day and since Mommy had some craft ideas for their American doll the school lesson was:

Crafts
This week: How do you play nice?

(That last part made me laugh! Do teacher's actually do that in the classroom?)
It was a lovely day so we took the crafts outside ... of course, I had to keep going inside to retrieve something but I love coming up to the door and seeing how content they were cutting, sewing, creating.
the aftermath of an afternoon of crafts... not to bad actually!
And the final end result! Each doll had their own backpack, folders, calculator, rulers and even a tiny student ID card. The crafts kept them occupied and I am not even sure they actually played school!

I got the craft ideas off Pinterest but the links for the backpack is here, and the school supplies is here... just in case you wanted to make some for own doll!

round two...

The flu bug bit again but this time it was this tiggeroo and he definitely wasn't very bouncy today. He also stayed home from school today but not as lucky as Alyssa since his fever started on Friday, whereas hers started on Monday. He got one day off from school while she managed to score three days... I am sure when he figures this out later, I will be hearing "no fair!"

Anyway, this is how I found him watching television today, shortly after giving him a snack...
Could the television really have been that much clearer?

little one...

a piled up blanket... a box of tissues...
... and one little sick girl!

Alyssa has been home for most the week from school. Her first day back to school was today and I think it wiped her out. After dinner, she curled up under her fleecy blanket and fell fast asleep at about 6:15pm. It reminded me of the time when she fell asleep on the kitchen floor a few years ago! Poor little one... now selfishly I hope the rest of us don't get this flu bug!

hello 2013

Happy new year!

I am a little bummed not because we skied new year's day, or that the weather was beautifully sunny but bitterly cold and we froze... but that I forgot my camera when we were skiing. It was so darn cold, my iPhone battery was quickly drained within 2 hours but I snuck in one photo of a pink snow bunny flying down a hill.
The funny thing about this photo is the fact that she was cruising down the hill, and at the bottom, she'd ask me "did I lose you in the snow dust, mamma?" or "how fast was I?" which is so unbelievably contrary to her recent experience at a bigger ski resort just after Christmas day when we met up with some friends at a ski condo they rented.

At the bigger resort, the very first lift she freaked ... and we aren't talking just a minor ordeal but a major one. It took me 2 1/2 hours to get her down one run on that mountain and it was completely unpredictable - one minute full on tears, crying, sobbing about how she can't ski and then turning a corner to discover with a "speak to the hand" stance "mamma, I do this one on my own. No help!" But back at our local small ski resort, she was confident and zooming a long without a worry in her cute little head!

I wish I had a photo of Jaiden skiing on new year's day. He did well and no longer skis many greens... he movin' to blues and he tells us after this ski season, it will be black all the way!
