take me out to the ball game

Another awesome day... today it was just Jaiden and I and we hit the Rockies game... not just any game, a game in which I scoped out tickets on StubHub and splurged for front row seats slightly behind 1st base! It also turned out to be a Sunday game in which if you get there early enough you can stand in line and get players signatures on balls, bats, shirts, hats, whatever you bring to have them sign. Jaiden wanted special baseballs so we went to the sporting goods store and picked up some new beautiful white baseballs.

The line for getting autographs was deceiving. There were 3 sections marked off and then you lined up in the seats like Disneyland and they wove around and around. I was really nervous. I knew this meant a lot to him so I told him we would split up and he take a line and I take a line. This made me even more nervous so we waited until the players came out. My line looked long but surprisingly it moved very quickly, before I knew it, I was at the front getting an autograph from Chad Bettis. I can't remember what exactly he said to me because I was excited that I managed to get an autograph for Jaiden, but I said something like "oh no, this is for my son, not me." He said "that was really nice of you to stand in line for him" which I thought was kind of funny but I was too happy to say anything else but thank you!
As I went up the bleachers, I noticed I had about 10 minutes more and I couldn't find Jaiden in his line anywhere. I didn't know what to do. They don't exactly let you wander through looking for your kid and I crossed my fingers and got in the 3rd line, which seemed quite short given there was still a fair amount of time left. I kept nervously looking for him so I could try and get his attention ... maybe but nothing. I kept weaving through the line and I was getting so much closer and time was ticking. Then all of sudden, I see Jaiden's line break apart as the player gets up to walk back to the dugout. Times up, but what I didn't know is the line I was in, the player had come out about 5 minutes late and there I was in the front row almost ready to walk down and that's when I saw Jaiden. Luckily he saw me and just before I was sent down, I asked the usher if my son could switch places with me. He gave me a look and asked "you mean he will go in your place?" and I said "yes please. He really wanted to do this and it looks like he didn't get to in the line he was in." The usher said "as long as you wait here, then yes."

I was so excited to be able to step aside and have Jaiden take his ball down to Eddie Butler. He was beaming when he walked back up the steps!

Next we went to sit in our seats. We were told that coaches and sometimes players would walk down the line and sign balls or whatever you had. Jaiden received one more signature from a coach. It was awesome.
Being in the front row was such an incredible experience. The best part was this game was against the Cincinnati Reds and this was noted to be a so-so game. That was not the case! It was intense and the plays were unreal. There was some of the strangest things that happened, 10 runs in the 3rd inning, players missing easy balls, double plays, steals and home runs that seriously rocked!
I can't wait to do this again with him next summer!

And while we were at the ball game, I got this hilarious text from Dennis - they finished packing up camp (Jaiden and I left early), got home, got pizza and made it to the pool before it had even opened!
I think I can safely say they had a good time as well!

#camping rocks!

The kids and I drove up Friday to Brainard Lake to meet Joan and the kids for a weekend of camping. It was awesome and beautiful. The first afternoon I had this crazy idea that Joan and I should bike down to the ticket booth ... clearly not remembering how far it was from the campsite nor that we were at over 10,000 ft but hey, it will be fun and we can get in some exercise... we nearly died riding back! It was intense riding and we were both wiped. It was still awesome.

So on Saturday morning when she said we could walk up to the upper lake, the dads and kids could fish while we hiked around the lake, I said sure! Little did we know just how long the hike was because it didn't really go around the lake, it went up and a ways out before circling back to the lake! It was a magnificent hike though.

Just before leaving the kids with Dennis and Bill, I grabbed a few photos because truly it was surreal how beautiful it was.
 Alyssa and Jade
Jaiden and Luke... no idea where Bill and Dennis are!
Such a beautiful day!

Later when we got back to camp, we had lunch and then ventured to the main part of Brainard Lake. Alyssa put on her swimsuit and ventured into the super cold snow melted mountain lake... I am seriously question her sanity! The boys dared her to travel to this small rock quite a ways away and she made it!
The best part was Joan and Bill brought their canoe and then we ran into our friends, Ben and his kids, Alicia and Tyler. A few photos of canoes on the lake...
 look at those gorgeous mountains!
 Alicia and Ben
Dennis and Alyssa

And I was supposed to be on shore watching the boys - Jaiden, Tyler and Luke!

And one more photo...
Jaiden, Tyler, Luke and Jade following Alicia and Ben in the canoe!

Wow, the weather was awesome!

barn park...

I took this photo and sent to Dennis "when was the last time we were here, doing this?"

It is hard to believe that not that long ago our summers involved at least twice weekly to the barn park for playing either in the morning or afternoon... and now? Now we bike around town, play baseball, swim at Sunset, hang with our friends, skateboard and go lots of big kid things... I kind of miss the hot days standing in the sand pushing especially Alyssa on the swing!

determined or crazy?

Alyssa is in the pool for her Blast 3 practice and it's pouring rain... not it's actually pouring in buckets of rain. Can't decide if she is determined or crazy?!

butterfly

I love this particular Friday because it's the day I get to go pick up my cuties from camp, but I am particularly excited this time. When I see Alyssa, I swear she has grown some more. She is her normal cute self and still dressed in her pajamas?!

I look for Jaiden and I still can't find him, When I finally do, he is upset. Not at all happy like I thought he would be. I tell him Amy sent me a text with a super cool photo. He says he can't do it, he breaks down and tells me that he missed today. I tell him it doesn't matter because he still did it, and we couldn't be more proud of him for overcoming that. I tell him just because he does it once and it works and the second time it doesn't work, doesn't mean he fails, it means he is learning just like Dad and I had to learn. I wonder if he will get the butterfly award that he has been wanting for two summers now and I am not sure.

The awards are given out and sure enough, he is called up. He isn't entirely excited - he still bummed he missed this morning and all I can do is hold back the tears. He finally did it!

And then he sits next to me with this on his lap...
... and I start tearing up again... we are turning a new page of his journey!

Yea camp!

I received a text from the Camp Director today with just a photo... and not any old photo but this one!
Woot! Woot! I am crying I am so excited for him!!

yea camp!

This year was a little different for camp and a little hard for one camper in particular. Camp actually begins on Sunday, however, Jaiden's baseball team had a special game on Sunday afternoon that he really wanted and needed to be at so I made arrangements to bring the kids up first thing on Monday morning.

A certain little girl had a lot of tears about going up late but she was certainly happy to be at camp. I grabbed a quick photo and really it was too quick because it turned out horrible... that will teach me for leaving my nice camera behind. Alyssa was assigned to Alpine again this year...
... and she was quick to unload and join the rest of her cabin on the all purpose courts!
Jaiden was being checked in at the nurses lodge. A lot of boys - leadership and younger boys - were there getting pokes for the morning. I purposefully had his prophy dose set up for Tuesday and Friday with the hopes that this might be the year he actually tries by himself. It was good for even me to come in and see how this really looks. It's actually pretty awesome. The boys really take control of their health. The nurses are only there to assist but the leadership boys (high school age) have a younger boy and they go through the entire process with them. Leadership boys infuse first having the younger boys help with mixing and any other part that is appropriate including having the younger boys poke the leadership if the younger boy is ready. It kind of brought tears to my eyes because the camaraderie is spilling out of the room and there is complete unity and normalness of the entire process, no one is left out, odd, scary or anything negative.

When I got back from dropping Alyssa off, Jaiden was already joking around with his friends  and kicking back like this is how it should be. I have him step outside so I can say good bye, and I remember I have silly string for him and Alyssa.
As I say good bye and walk back to the car, I say make sure you give that other one to your sister and he smiles like a big brother and replies "You bet I will give it to her ... after I cover her sleeping bag in it!"

Yep, camp life has begun!

camp chris dobbins photos

I need to remember to grab Dennis' phone periodically and get photos off of it especially when they go somewhere without me! I found a lot of fun camp photos from the past week while they were away. Here are a few of the memories from Boy Scout camp...
Tyler and Jaiden setting up their tent!
Working on the rifle merit badge..
... and then practicing the rifle shooting. I can't believe how far the targets are. In Cub Scouts there were about a third of that distance!
 Ice cream stop before lunch!
 Boating or Sailing merit badge...
... and trying to capsize their boat somewhere out there?! Apparently, Jaiden and Ben were too small to really capsize it and it took them awhile before they had success!

Just a few photos from their great week together!

happy 4th!

Happy 4th of July!

The boys came home yesterday and we had planned a low key 4th of July barbecue with our somewhat neighbor friends. A few were out of town but the ones that could make was awesome! It was a muggy afternoon with cloud coverage so thankfully it wasn't a scorcher! We were able to be outside and enjoy the afternoon with relaxing on the hammock...
games with our good friends...
sidewalk art...
line up of fireworks...
line up of punks!
a very cool and creative safety line compliments of Malia...
an audience...
sparklers...
more sparklers...
and some funny dance moves... I mean, run after you light the firework...
and a tank that actually did a lot more than that!
At dark, we went to the local green space/ sort of park and sat on the hill and watched the city fireworks while swatting mosquitoes!

It was a perfect 4th!

bucket list

When Alyssa was at camp, I asked Jaiden for a short list of things he'd like to do while his sister is away. He normally has ideas for movies that are a little scary or gory for Alyssa that he'd like to watch, hang at the pool with friends, bike rides, etc.

When Jaiden was away at camp, I asked Alyssa what would you like to do while Jaiden is gone? And her first choice? Go to the zoo!

I was surprised by that and felt a tinge of guilt that we hadn't gone in a long, long time. I couldn't even remember the last zoo visit - was it her 1st grade field trip?

Of course when we started making plans to go, she asked if we could bring Sophie. The three of us headed to the zoo for the day!
This photo is when we first arrived. Both girls had maps in hand and were walking, talking and planning what to see. I loved that I followed along. The other adorable thing was they both had these cute monster bags that Alyssa had won earlier in the week when she and I went Dave n Busters.
And this is a favorite of mine as well. I love that these two are such good friends.

We were all over the zoo, we had lunch, we stopped for that strange ice cream treat called Dippin' Dots, and they played for a long time in the elephant area and also on the old chuckwagon. The train wasn't working or we would have been on that too. It was an awesome day with these two cuties!

jeweler badge

One of the many things I like to do with Alyssa is work on Girl Scout badges and while the boys were at Boy Scout camp, it seemed like a fun idea to do our own kind of Scout adventures here at home. She chose the Jeweler's badge. Since it is just her and I, I figure we can do something that is a little more involved versus when I am running a meeting with the entire troop.

The badge is broken into 5 various steps. There are suggestions listed under each step but I try to let the girls decide on their own how to meet the step. Sometimes the suggestions are awesome and inspiring and other times they are the opposite - they seem a little dry and boring.

The steps for Jeweler badge were:
Step 1: Get to know the tools of the trade
Step 2: Make jewelry with metal
Step 3: Turn everyday objects into jewelry
Step 4: Create jewelry inspired by another culture
Step 5: Make a sparkling gift

We started with Step 1 and then moved onto Step 2.
Here Alyssa is working with the round nosed plier for practicing wire bending. She was very intrigued with being able to bend the wire into shapes or twisting it around the round nose of the plier to make curly q's.

I also taught her how use jump rings and various attachments. Here is her finished product...
She made another pair with seashells to complete Step 3 but then she was done for the afternoon and off she went to play with Sophie!
